The Telegraph reports that it has acquired a copy of a handwritten memo, dated July 1, 2001, evidencing that Mohammed Atta’s, the al-Qaeda mastermind of the September 11 attacks, was trained in Iraq. The secret memo was written to Saddam Hussein, by Tahir Jalil Habbush al-Tikriti, the former head of the Iraqi Intelligence Service.
The story states that Atta was “trained in Baghdad by Abu Nidal, the notorious Palestinian terrorist.”
In the memo, Habbush reports that Atta "displayed extraordinary effort" and demonstrated his ability to lead the team that would be "responsible for attacking the targets that we have agreed to destroy."
If true, this is an explosive report:
The Telegraph article offers new support for the Feith memo and will breath new life into the debate about allegations of collaboration between al-Qaeda and Iraq. I have been posting about this debate since the Weekly Standard published Stephen Case’s Case Closed article four weeks ago.
