The Christian Science Monitor, reporting on a recent study from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, offers some interesting statistics:
The percentage of adult Americans online has leveled off, at 63 percent.
Among Americans with less than a high school education, internet usage actually dropped from 31 percent in January 2002 to 26 percent in August 2003.
About a quarter of Americans have never been online.
More than 75 percent of Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 use the Internet.
Young Internet users like instant messaging and downloading music. Older Americans more often seek health information and material at government websites.
The most popular online activity is sending e-mail.
66 million Americans are online on a typical day.
The Monitor didn’t report that te study also found a gender gap. Female are more likely to seek health or religious information on the Internet, while male users are more likely to seek news, financial information, sports news, and political news.
I am surprised that internet usage has decreased among those less educated. I guess you have to be able to read to enjoy the medium. I am shocked that so many Americans, one-fourth have never been on line.
