The Associated Press reports that former NAACP President and five-term U.S. congressman will run for the U.S. Senate in 2006:
"It is with great pride and deep humility that I announce to you today my candidacy for the Senate of the United States," Mfume said in a three-page statement made available to reporters at a news conference in Baltimore.
Senator Sarbanes announced Friday that he would not seek a sixth term.
On Saturday, Patrick Ruffini posted that the race for Sarbanes' seat might wind up being Mfume v. Steele. A race Ruffini sees as a tossup.

Hello,
Steele has a serious shot but Mfume is damaged goods. He has the name recognition but name recognition does not always translate into approval. I am a Democrat but I do not see Kweisi Mfume as our strongest candidate. The Baltimore Sun says he is not raising money and has no organization. Lets see what the sex scandal does to him in the polls. My prediction is Kweisi does not make it out of the Democratic Primary.
Best wishes,
J. Barry O'Connell
