The Associated Press reports U.S. and Iraqi troops swept into the insurgent stronghold of Tal Afar early Saturday.
The U.S. military reported killing 11 insurgents during raids over the past two days. The Iraqi military claimed it had arrested nearly 200 insurgents, including 150 foreign fighters who had slipped into the country from Syria.
According to Reuters, Iraq's defense minister, Saadoun Dulaimi, said troops had killed 141 insurgents and captured 197, many of them Arabs from countries other than Iraq, in the past two days at Tal Afar. Dulaimi also said government forces were ready to strike insurgents in four other northwestern towns:
"We tell our people in Ramadi, Samarra, Rawa and Qaim that we are coming," Dulaimi said. "There will be no refuge for the terrorists, criminals and bloodsuckers."
