Political beauty contests like this CNN presidential preference poll don't actually mean much, but political junkies find such things fascinating.
According to the poll, Illinois Senator Barack Obama, who until recently said he would not run for president in 2008, now trails only Hillary Rodham Clinton among CNN's list of potential Democratic candidates.
Obama is preferred by 17 percent of registered Democrats, placing second, ahead of Gore, Edwards, and Kerry. Clinton has fallen from 38 percent in September to 28 percent and remains the front-runner.
Obama appears to be drawing support from Clinton and Gore, who has fallen from 19 percent in September to 13 percent.
On the Republican side, Arizona Senator John McCainis running neck and neck with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. McCain has picked up 6 points of support since September. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is the only other Republican in double digits, with 12 percent. Virginia Senator George Allen of Virginia has fallen to 2 percent, down from 7 percent last month.
The California Yankee list of potential 2008 presidential candidates numbers 27.
