
Republican presidential nominee to be, Senator John McCain, is compiling a list of potential running mates:
The Arizona senator said the list included about 20 names but he would give none of them. A host of Republican politicians have been mentioned as possibilities. "It's every name imaginable," he said.McCain said "a couple of people" have been approached about heading his vice presidential search committee, with no decision made yet.
He would like to have his running mate set before the Republican convention in Minneapolis in early September that will nominate McCain.
The "host of Republican politicians" mentioned as potential running mates, includes Governors Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Charlie Crist of Florida, Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Jon Huntsman Jr. of Utah, and Mark Sanford of South Carolina, and ex-governors Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania, Mike Huckabee of Arkansas and Mitt Romney, a Massachusetts. Rob Portman, a former Ohio congressman and director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice have been mentioned as well.
