Four months after suffering a heart attack and undergoing double bypass surgery, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and his expedition partner, Dr. Mike Stroud, ran seven marathons, in seven days, on six continents.
Unable to make it to Antarctica, they started in Patagonia, in southern Chile. There they ran a 26-mile course along the waters of the Magellan Strait. The next day they used the Falkland Islands as a substitute for Antarctica.
The third marathon was ran in Sydney. Running in 90-degree heat in Singapore, Stroud needed medical attention briefly during the fourth marathon and finished 42 minutes after Fiennes.
In London for the fifth marathon they followed the route of the first Olympic marathon in 1908. After that they ran in Cairo.
In New York they ran the only organized marathon of their adventure. They finished the New York City Marathon in 5 hours, 25 minutes, 46 seconds.
The pair ran 183 miles and traveled about 45,000 miles.
Dubbed the 'World's Greatest Living Explorer' by the Guinness Book of Records, Fiennes’ adventures include the first surface journey made around the world's polar axis, which took over two years to complete; several unsupported North Polar Expeditions; and the unassisted crossing of the Antarctic Continent.
