The NY Times, the Washington Post and Newsweek all have articles today about the Weekly Standard’s Case Closed article.
The New York Times article parrots the CIA’s view that the the jury is still out on the relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda.
The Washington Post quotes Senator John D. Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), saying, “the intelligence community assessment was and continues to be that any connection between Iraq and al Qaeda is tenuous. Otherwise the Washington Post casts the Feith memo as exacerbating strains between the Defense Department and the CIA.
Both the Times and the Post mention that there will be an investigation into the leak of the Feith memo.
Newsweek on the other hand tries to demolish the Case Closed article. The first sentence sums up all Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball have to say:
A leaked Defense Department memo claiming new evidence of an “operational relationship” between Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein’s former regime is mostly based on unverified claims that were first advanced by some top Bush administration officials more than a year ago—and were largely discounted at the time by the U.S. intelligence community, according to current and former U.S. intelligence officials.
This is not the kind of coverage I wanted from the main stream media. I would appreciate some actual analysis about the information contained in the Feith memo. All we have gotten is the politically slanted it contains nothing but old news.
