Reuters is now reporting more than 15,000 were killed in the Bam earthquake in the southeastern . This morning when I first read reports that the earthquake caused 10,000 deaths, I was sure the number would be revised downward.
The New York Times reports that even though has a strong domestic rescue and medical capacity to deal with earthquakes, but has asked for help including sniffer dogs, rescue teams, and equipment for field hospitals, water purification and electricity generation.
This is indeed a terrible tragedy.

Shouldn't the US offer to send relief supplies too? It would be the Christian thing to do; loving your enemies and all that. It also would be the geopolitically astute thing to do; nothing so perplexes your enemies as showing them love. Given reports that has been quietly cooperating with the war on terror and that its people are increasingly interested in reform, moreover, showing them that the US can play both carrots and sticks seems like a very good idea. It just might encourage the reformists and discourage the radicals.The good professor is right on.
