East Hampton, Long Island canceled its Fourth of July fireworks because Piping Plovers have nests along Main Beach where the village holds its annual Fourth of July fireworks show.
According to the Associated Press:
Federal law says fireworks are not permitted within three-quarters of a mile of a piping plover nest.

The piping plover is an endangered species in New York State. But it is considered only threatened on the federal list.
