At least 58 persons were killed and dozens wounded in a three bomb attack in the Indian capital of New Delhi yesterday. The explosions ripped through a bus and two markets.
According to Bloomberg, terrorists trying to derail peace efforts between India and Pakistan may be responsible for the New Delhi bombings:
They're trying to thwart "the peace process between India and Pakistan, and are trying to create a riot between the Muslims and Hindus," Rohan Gunaratna, head of terrorism research at Singapore's Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies, said today in a telephone interview.
The attacks came while India and Pakistan were wrapping up negotiations of an agreement to open the border dividing the earthquake-devastated territory of Kashmir to transportation of relief goods and to help divided families meet. Kashmir has been the cause of two armed conflicts since independence in 1947, and the nuclear-armed neighbors have sought to ease tensions since April 2003, after coming close to another war the previous year.

"The only two groups that can mount an attack like that are Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed," Gunaratna said today.
Gunaratna's analysis gained credibility when an Islamic terrorist group with links to Lashkar-e-Taiba said it was responsible for the New Delhi bombings. Lashkar was blamed by for 2001 attack on India's parliament.
