Succumbing to weeks of pressure from her party and even her own husband, Republican Jeanine Pirro gave up her campaign for the U.S. Senate, and said she will run for New York attorney general instead:
"I have decided that my law enforcement background better qualifies me for a race for New York State attorney general than a race for the United States Senate," Pirro, the Westchester County district attorney, said in a statement.
Pirro's departure from the race leaves former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer and William Brenner, an attorney from the Catskills region, actively pursuing the Republican Senate nomination. Some expect Edward Cox, a son-in-law of President Nixon, to re-enter the race.
