The Associated Press reports New York's leading candidate for governor, Democrat Eliot Spitzer, has chosen State Senate Democratic leader David Paterson as his running mate.
According to the Associated Press, Paterson, who is legally blind, is New York's top black legislator. Paterson was elected in 1985 at age 31, representing a Manhattan district. He was elected minority leader in 2002. He is a graduate of Columbia University and Hofstra University Law School.
Actually, New York has a weird system (what else is new?) regarding lieutenant governor. They're supposed to run independently of the governor candidate in the primary. They are then "stuck with each other" in the general election. This happened with Mario Cuomo and his "pick," Carl McCall, in 1982 -- Cuomo run the primary but McCall lost and Cuomo had to run with the winner, Alfred DelBello.
So I'm not sure how Spitzer could "pick" anyone, unless the Democratic Party is deliberately choosing not to hold a primary.
