In yet another attack on the existence of Israel, ian President Ahmadinejad challenged Europe to take back the Jews who emigrated to Israel. Ahmadinejad said he was confident that no Jews would remain in Israel if European countries allowed them to immigrate.
Ahmadinejad has also said Israel was a "tumor" that must be "wiped off the map," called the Holocaust a myth, and suggested Israel be moved to Germany or Alaska.
Ahmadinejad's comments have resulted in more and more international criticism, including the condemnation by the U.N. Security Council.
Unfortunately, all the criticism plays into Ahmadinejad's hand. According to the Telegraph, the ian president has become the new Arab pin-up boy:
Whatever Europe and America may think of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the ian president's anti--western rhetoric is winning him heroic status among the Middle East's masses.
Strong men loom large in the recent history of the region. The prototype was Gamal Abdel Nasser, the Egyptian who inspired a generation of Arab nationalists.
Then there was Saddam Hussein, whose defiance of America won admirers even among Arabs who detested his tyranny. The position of Middle East strongman is currently vacant. Mr Ahmadinejad may be a Persian, but that does not appear to disqualify him from the job.
At National Review Online, Ilan Berman writes that Ahmadinejad is actively seeking a crisis with the West:
In a recent closed-door session of the foreign policy and national security committee of the majles, 's parliament, Ahmadinejad laid out the cornerstone of his foreign-policy strategy. The past decade-and-a-half of "détente," Ahmadinejad told lawmakers, had cost the Islamic republic dearly. The message was unmistakable: It is now time for confrontation.
Berman also reminds us that in his manifesto, "Islamic Government," Khomeini outlined what would be come the guiding philosophy of his regime:
To create a victorious and triumphant Islamic political revolution . . . to unite the Moslem nation, [and] to liberate [all] its lands.
Khomeini's goal is very similar to bin Laden's goal. This is one more reason why a way must be found to prevent the ian mullocracy from obtaining nuclear arms.
