United Press International reports the British, French and German ambassadors to Washington called for the closing of the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay:
"Guantanamo is an embarrassment, and so it has to be solved one way or the other, " said Jean-David Levitte of France. "It is necessary to have the people in Guantanamo get a fair trial."
Wolfgang Ischinger of Germany and Sir David Manning of Britain joined Levitte on CNN on Sunday to urge the closure. Manning took a somewhat softer line on the detention center at the U.S. Marine base in Cuba, saying that "it is difficult to find the right line to draw."
I don't understand why people don't get the difference between enemy combatants and criminals.
The US is well on the way to being a world pariah, and detention without trial is one reason. The "War on Terror" will never be over because it doesn't exist. How can you have a war against an intangible concept? So theoretically this means the Guantanamo inmates will never be released, so presumably will never have their day in court. Guantanamo Bay: The Caribbean holiday of a lifetime. Make that for a lifetime. Imagine the Canadians must be seriously miffed about how many US citizens are assuming Canadian nationality when abroad. But with only 30% of you holding passports, not a major problem: Love it and never leave it.
