The Associated Press reports Italy granted asylum to Abdul Rahman, the Afghan who faced the death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity. Premier Berlusconi said Rahman is in the care of the Italian Interior Ministry after arriving in Italy:
Abdul Rahman "is already in Italy. I think he arrived overnight," Berlusconi said, declining to release more details.
Earlier today, Afghanistan's parliament demanded that the Rahman be prevented from fleeing the country.
Muslim clerics in Afghanistan condemned Rahman's release, saying it was a "betrayal of Islam," and threatened to incite violent protests.
This should be recorded as another victory over our enemies in the War Against Terror. Had the extremists managed to murder Rahman, Western support for Afghanistan would have crumbled.
