The Sacramento Bee's Kevin Yamamura reports that despite gathering more endorsements and starting as the front-runner, state Treasurer Phil Angelides considers himself the "underdog" in his primary race against Controller Steve Westly for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger:
"Look, I think I'm the underdog in this race right now," Angelides said in a breakfast meeting with The Bee's Capitol Bureau. "I'm being outspent dramatically on TV and will be all the way to the finish line."
A Silicon Valley multimillionaire, Westly has given his own campaign $22.5 million. Angelides' campaign reported having $14.5 million in cash as of March 17.
Recent polls show that the majority of Democrats likely to vote in the June 6 primary remain undecided. Angelides and Westly are nearly even among those Democrats who have an opinion.
The two Democratic Governor wannabees have gone negative in hopes of winning the right to challenge Governor Schwarzenegger.
