The U.S. government warned Friday of possible terrorist threats to Americans in China.
The notice, posted on the website of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and transmitted by e-mail to American citizens, stated:
The United States Government has received unconfirmed information of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. interests in China, especially in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. This threat also may exist for places where Americans are known to congregate or visit, including clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools or outdoor recreation events.
American citizens in China are advised to be aware of their surroundings and remain alert to possible threats.
According to the Associated Press, embassy spokeswoman Sheila Paskman said the possible threats were specific to China and not part of a larger regional or worldwide alert.
"This is China-specific," she said, declining to elaborate.
Americans were not being urged to alter their travel plans or normal business, she said.
"This particular notice is simply asking people to be aware of threats," she said.
China has largely escaped terrorism by international groups.
Reuters reports "the embassy issued a similar notice in China in November, warning at that time that police had told them Islamic extremists could be planning attacks on luxury hotels in China." It retracted that warning a day later, saying Chinese authorities concluded the source of the information was not credible.
If you were American in China how would you respond to this warning?
