Rhode Island Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee overcame a primary challenge, increasing the Republicans chances of maintaining control of the U.S. Senate.
Chafee defeated Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey, 54 to 46 percent.
The Rhode Island race was compared by many to the primary defeat of Democratic Senator Lieberman in Connecticut.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee backed Chafee even though he often votes against the Bush administration and Laffey, was supported by the Club for Growth, an anti-tax and advocacy group credited with toppling Republican Congressman Joe Schwarz in Michigan's August primary.
The conservatives opposing the liberal Chafee didn't recognize that Rhode Island is about the bluest of the blue states where fewer than 70,000 are registered Republicans. Who knows how few consider themselves conservatives.
