Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has scaled back plans for the August 11, straw poll in Ames, Iowa.
The campaign has reduced the budget for the straw poll and the number of supporters the campaign plans to bus in to the event because Giuliani and McCain have decided not to participate:
"I think initially we planned to bring in a very large number of folks from across the state for the straw poll," Romney told reporters. "We've cut back on our target from that standpoint to a level where we think we can win, but we're not trying to overwhelm anybody."
The straw poll provides an opportunity for Republican candidates to test their get-out-the-vote operation before the January caucuses. No candidate has skipped the event and won the Iowa caucuses the following January.
Does the straw poll matter if three of four frontrunners don't participate?
