Mississippi Congressman Chip Pickering won't seek the Senate seat vacated by Trent Lott:
Pickering, 44, announced in August that he would not seek a seventh term in the House of Representatives when his current two-year term expires in January 2009 because he wants to spend more time with his family.Pickering said in a statement issued Friday that he stood by that decision. He said he spoke with Barbour and "asked him to remove my name from consideration for the appointment."
Governor Haley Barbour is expected to appoint someone to fill the seat on Monday. That person will serve until a special election can be held November 4.
