I don't think you get it. We all have unsavory friends, we know people who say racist things even around the office cooler and we still invite them to our Christmas parties. To say that you are somehow tainted and agree with the person just because you are friends with them is simplistic. The idea that one must disaccociate yourself with all that disagree with you... that is the bridge we've taken with Bush. He does just that and no communication happens. Ignoring the racisim that is there, "disaccociating" doesn't make the problem go away, it only serves to widen the chasm. You did not call for Obama to disaccociate himself from his racist white grandmother... yet he needs to disaccociate from the pastor? How are they different? Obama is merely saying, I don't agree with their rhetoric, but they are more than that. They are complex human beings who have failings and also wonderful attributes that have given to my life and if we make an effort to understand the pain and the wounds that are in this country these very really fears of both races, instead of turning off, we can start to heal. To disaccociate does nothing but hide the problem.
