During the 2004 election, President George W. Bush increased his share of the black vote. He did so in part by questioning black voters support for Democrats at Democratic strongholds such as the Urban League's annual convention, where he quoted Charlie Gaines:
Blacks are gagging on the donkey but not yet ready to swallow the elephant.
