Conservative commentator and radio talk show host Herman Cain is the first potential GOP 2012 candidate to announce the formation of a presidential exploratory committee.
Cain has been hinting for months that he intends to run for the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination. The exploratory committee formalizes the process of allowing Cain assess his ability to obtain the necessary financial resources and grassroots support needed to win the nomination.
Cain addresses his longshot status head on:
"People who say that Herman Cain has no chance of winning the nomination for the Republican Party, or win the in presidency, I simply say 'Thank you.' Because all my life, I have been in situations where I wasn't supposed to become VP of Pillsbury, I wasn't supposed to be able to turn Godfather's Pizza around. I wasn't supposed to succeed in climbing the corporate ladder in corporate America. So to the people who say I don't have a chance, I say 'Thank you.' Because that inspires me."
Cain has a compelling story. He was born to working-class parents in Georgia, earned a degree in mathematics from Morehouse College and a master’s in computer science from Purdue. He worked for the Navy on fire-control systems for ships and fighter planes. Cain then moved to the business world Coca-Cola, Pillsbury, and Burger King—and eventually became CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, which he ran for 10 years.
Cain has never held elective office. He ran in the 2004 Georgia GOP primary for U.S. Senate. He is also credited by some with being instrumental in defeating HillaryCare.
