Sen. Ted Cruz gave Donald Trump an unexpected defeat in the Iowa Republican Caucus destroying Trumps presumed invincibility in the process. Cruz won with 51,666 votes, more than any other Iowa Republican Caucus winner.
It was a come from behind upset victory for Cruz. After Cruz took the lead in Iowa polls in December, a lot happened during January. Trump unloaded everything he could on Cruz and regained his lead in the Iowa polls. Just before the Caucuses some insiders thought the race between Cruz and Trump was too close call. More were ready to call it for Trump. But it was still all about the Campaigns' ground games. The Caucuses goers couldn't be counted until they were turned out and showed up.
Despite Trump's attacks, being everyone's punching bag during the last debate, the polling and even the surge in Iowa voter registrations, Cruz won it the old-fashioned way. The Cruz campaign had the best ground game, bar none. More Iowans reported being contacted by the Cruz campaign.
My biggest concern was that the guy running Trump's ground game ran Santorum's surprise win in 2012. But he wasn't able to do it again, not last tonight.
Trump has his die-hard faithful followers. But the Trump campaign couldn't overcome Trump's unpopularity, horrific unfavorable ratings, New York values, his problem with women, his cut and run from the Iowa debate stunt to avoid tough questions from Megyn Kelly and debate Cruz, and his lost bet that he could run against FoxNews
